Now I have collected my notes for your perusal in the tome below. Depending how you count, MIT either has a lot of libraries, or a LOT of libraries. Because I count geographically, I will go with the former definition. Lets say that MIT has four library clusters: Barker, Dewey, the Hayden/Building 14 cluster, and Rotch. I have ventured forth into each one, and now I will provide you with pictures and a Shuli-approved TM review. I have also given each a star rating out of five (but keep in mind that all libraries are good boys, and therefore these ratings might be, uh, somewhat biased). As a last disclaimer, these are very subjective rankings and even the information provided is subject to what I found interesting or useful; as a currently-undeclared freshman, I definitely dont provide the perspective of the whole Institute, and Im sure that if a different person visited these libraries, they could get something completely different and equally great out of the experience. And now, onwards! Barker  ?????? Im kind of sad that I decided to put these alphabetically, because Barker is SO GOOD that its rude to the other libraries to lead with it. Barker is the library under the dome you take the elevators in Lobby 10 up to the fifth floor, and then wind yourself through a bit of awkward hallway to get to the library itself. One interesting point here is that a lot of the libraries have 24-hour study spaces, which dont have access to actual books but can be open all the time because they dont require staff to run. In most libraries, the 24-hour study space is slightly sad, and if your first visit is with your friend on Labour Day weekend, and it is the only thing that is open, and you really wanted to See Some Books, you will also be slightly sad. (My friend Avery 22 and I went on a Bibliological Adventure, and although it was a good time, there was definitely a sense that we were missing out on some grandeur.) HOWEVER, in Barker, the 24-hour study space is the part that is actually under the dome, and it is  incredibly beautiful. It is quiet. The green squishy chairs are soft, and large, so that you can lose yourself within them. You can look up, and the natural light will stream in, and you will feel like you are looking at the stars small and yet enormous, alone and yet so comfortably and perfectly held by the sky. I have been told there are also books. In fact, I have a free hour on Fridays before class in 10-250 (right below Barker) and so I am here quite often; I have walked past the books on the way to the study space, and those shelves do look interesting. But the call of the dome supersedes all. Dewey ????? In my original draft for this post, I had given Dewey four stars because of the trek: its the library for the Sloan School of Management, which is all the way to the east of campus (not as far as it would be if I lived on west campus, at least!) But honestly, getting a tiny bit away from campus was really nice: I got to see familiar buildings from a different angle, and with less crowding, I could see the sunset! The air was fresh and crisp when I went and it felt like a perfect fall night. Note the difference between when I walked in (left) and out (middle+right). Boston sunsets are beautiful but quick and early. Im not that into business and management, and Id expected that I would be pretty bored by the books at Dewey. In fact, they were incredibly interesting-looking!! I decided on the spot that, although I dont have the mental brainspace to read intellectually stimulating books during the semester, I want to dedicate some of my time this IAP to doing so. Look at these book titles !!!!!!!!! There was so much cool psychology, modern history, and political systems stuff; my fingers were literally twitching as I restrained myself from taking out a huge stack. Lastly, Dewey has reservable study rooms! You can tap your ID to reserve a room for hours. Although I like to work with people around, if you need a nice big table and whiteboard to yourself, this could be a great spot. Hayden cluster  ?????? This rating is not quite as good as Barkers rating, because it is in fact divided over the whole Building 14 cluster. Within 14, you can find Hayden library itself, but there are also two other libraries: the Institute Archives and Special Collections and the Lewis Music Library. The Institute Archives have a very specific purpose, which is to store and document materials directly relating to MIT and its history. They have records of plans for new buildings, letters from faculty, pictures of students and student organizations, and generally a ton of cool stuff! I was not able to actually enter the Archives, because theyre open during pretty much exactly the hours I have class,01 Dont skip your classes, kids. but I do have these photos of the really interesting posters outside: The Lewis music library is so fancy  ??  The door handles are shaped like music notes, and they have a beauuuutiful staircase with sheet music on it! Besides that, though, its also a genuinely good resource for anyone who needs anything music related: they have DVDs you can borrow of operas and musical performances, toooooons of music scores (like seriously, shelves and shelves of scores), and computers with music editing software available for use! Also just a cozy place to have a seat, imo (and super close to EC if youre into that kind of thing :0) Hayden is what I call the fun library, which is to say that it has the kinds of books one might read if one was very tired of reading ones textbooks. It also has a lot of academic materials, like up-to-date copies of science journals and students theses, and I imagine these would be very helpful if I were conducting research for a class (its the humanities and sciences library, so theres lots of scope there). I had a very pleasant half-hour looking through all the super-interesting new books they had out, ranging from an LGBT horror story anthology to historical fiction to pop psych, and wished I could have taken them all out I would have, if not for the memory of the unfinished psets sitting in my backpack. They have a graphic novel collection (which is 90% manga, of course) as well, and audiobooks and travelogues if thats up your alley :D Rotch ????? Rotch is not the most exciting library I went to, but it is very beautiful and cool! Its on the second floor of building 7 (the staircase are right on the north side of lobby 7). When I walked in, I was greeted with this lovely man all the way at the back, which of course made me very happy right off the bat. Its the architecture and planning library, which means that it has sweeeeeet maps. There are two types: enormous maps, and freakin enormous maps. I was too scared to take one out and have to, like, figure out how to put it back, but o m g they were so huge and many and varied! They have international maps, American maps, and a ton of really really detailed MA/Boston maps. In the basement, theres a lab that runs workshops on geographic information systems and visualizing data. Theyve also got stacks with lots of architecture research books and microfiche (~microfiche~! :0) Plus: art. So much art. Aaaaaand a 1,000 piece doctor who jigsaw puzzle!!! While I personally dont see myself doing much architecture research, the library was very cool and seemed like a great place to work or chill. BONUS library!!!  ?????? Since you stayed with me through all this mental trekking around, I have a surprise bonus library for you! Its the MIT Science Fiction Society, the worlds largest public open-shelf collection of science fiction. (Quoted from their website) Because the MITSFS is a student-run library, you do have to pay a small membership fee. But in return for $20, I secured the rights to take out tons of amazing scifi books for four years! They have alllll the old classics (I left with a few Ursula K. LeGuins Ive been liking a lot so far) and new stuff, too (I spotted copies of Holly Blacks White Cat series!) I really enjoyed my visit ^-^ The library atmosphere is so nice and cozy: all couches and shelves shelves of friendly, awesome-looking books. Its on the fourth floor02 The fourth floor is where all the student organizations are housed, as I found out on this pilgrimage, so you can discover a ton of clubs just by walking around. of the Student Center, which is nice and easy to get to, so I will definitely be dropping by in the future to replenish my supplies. Runaway,  by the Nobel Prize-winning Canadian author Alice Munro, tells the story of a young woman who refuses a chance to escape a bad marriage. Multiple Runaways Runaway people, animals, and emotions abound in the story. The wife, Carla, is twice a runaway. When she was 18 and college-bound, she ran off to marry her husband, Clark, against her parents  wishes and has been estranged from them since. And now, getting on a bus to Toronto, she runs away a second time—this time from Clark. Carlas beloved white goat, Flora, also appears to be a runaway, having inexplicably disappeared shortly before the start of the story. (By the end of the story, though, it seems likely that Clark has been trying to get rid of the goat all along.) If we think of runaway  as meaning out of control  (as in runaway train),  other examples come to mind in the story. First, there is Sylvia Jamiesons runaway emotional attachment to Carla (what Sylvias friends describe dismissively as an inevitable crush on a girl). There is also Sylvias runaway involvement in Carlas life, pushing her along a path that Sylvia imagines is best for Carla, but which she is, perhaps, not ready for or doesnt really want. Clark and Carlas marriage seems to be following a runaway trajectory. Finally, there is Clarks runaway temper, carefully documented early in the story, that threatens to become truly dangerous when he goes to Sylvias house in the night to confront her about encouraging Carlas departure. Parallels Between Goat and Girl Munro describes the goats behavior in ways that mirror Carlas relationship with Clark. She writes: At first she had been Clark’s pet entirely, following him everywhere, dancing for his attention. She was as quick and graceful and provocative as a kitten, and her resemblance to a guileless girl in love had made them both laugh. When Carla first left home, she behaved much in the starry-eyed manner of the goat. She was filled with giddy delight  in her pursuit of a more authentic kind of life  with Clark. She was impressed by his good looks, his colorful employment history, and everything about him that ignored her. Clarks repeated suggestion that Flora might have just gone off to find herself a billy  obviously parallels Carlas running away from her parents to marry Clark. Whats especially troubling about this parallel is that the first time Flora disappears, she is lost but still alive. The second time she disappears, it seems almost certain that Clark has killed her. This suggests that Carla is going to be in a much more dangerous position for having returned to Clark. As the goat matured, she changed alliances. Munro writes, But as she grew older she seemed to attach herself to Carla, and in this attachment, she was suddenly much wiser, less skittish—she seemed capable, instead, of a subdued and ironic sort of humor. If Clark has, in fact, killed the goat (and it seems likely he has),  it is symbolic of his commitment to killing off any of Carlas impulses to think or act independently—to be anything but the guileless girl in love  who married him. Carla’s Responsibility Though Clark is clearly presented as a murderous, stultifying force, the story also places some of the responsibility for Carlas situation on Carla herself. Consider the way Flora allows Clark to pet her, even though he may have been responsible for her original disappearance and is probably about to kill her. When Sylvia tries to pet her, Flora puts her head down as if to butt. Goats are unpredictable,  Clark tells Sylvia. They can seem tame but they’re not really. Not after they grow up.  His words seem to apply to Carla, as well. She has behaved unpredictably, siding with Clark, who was causing her distress, and butting  Sylvia by exiting the bus and forgoing the escape Sylvia has offered. For Sylvia, Carla is a girl who needs guidance and saving, and it is hard for her to imagine that Carlas choice to return to Clark was the choice of an adult woman. Is she grown up?  Sylvia asks Clark about the goat. She looks so small. Clarks answer is ambiguous: She’s as big as she’s ever going to get.  This suggests that Carlas being grown up  might not look like Sylvias definition of grown up.  Eventually, Sylvia comes to see Clarks point. Her letter of apology to Carla even explains that she made the mistake of thinking somehow that Carlas freedom and happiness were the same thing. One way in which we do this by following their lead: by adopting the distinctive fashion styles associated with them. Sometimes, this can be something simple, such as buying a new pair of designer jeans. At other times, this can mean embracing a culture that may be foreign to us. This is how Hindi styles have begun to take hold in mainstream fashion. The latest word in film—and in fashion—is Bollywood. Bollywood is used informally to refer to the film industry in India. It was coined as a shortened form of Bombay plus Hollywood. Each time one of these stars appears in a film, the clothing they wear becomes a desired commodity. This includes accessories, footwear, and jewelry. In addition, the way they wear the garment can become a trend in itself. For example, if they do something different or daring, chances are that this, too, will be copied by their fans. The salwar-kameez refers to a womens suit that usually consists of a kameez (tunic), a salwar (pair of loose pants), and a dupatta (matching scarf worn in various ways). These garments, traditionally worn by women of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, are now becoming globally known. In fact, the fashion world within India itself has undergone a transformation. A Titration is a process of the concentration of one solution being determined by its reaction with either a standard solution or a known quantity of solid dissolved in solution. It may also be used to calculate the molar mass of an unknown acid or base. Purpose: I. Prepare a standard solution of sodium hydroxide II. Standardize a sodium hydroxide solution by using potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) III. When given whether the acid is monoprotic, diprotic, or triprotic , determine the molar mass of the unknown organic acid. IV. Calculate the Molarity of the Soft drink. Materials: * 50 mL Buret * Beaker * Erlenmeyer Flask * Sodium Hydroxide * Water * Balance * Unknown Acids (A, B, C) * Calculator * Soft Drink (Ginger Ale) Procedure: A – Preparation of NaOH (standard solution) 1. With portions of water, rinse a 2L bottle. 2. To make 2L of a 0.1M solution, determine the amount of grams of sodium hydroxide that are needed and then weigh out the correct number of grams when showing the calculation. 3. To a container that is  ½ to 1/3 full of water, add the pellets of sodium hydroxide. Shake to mix or speed up the dissolving of the pellets and fill to the top with water. Label your container with your name and date. B – Standardization of NaOH (Determine the actual concentration of the standard solution) 1. Drain the 50 mL buret and remember to fill the buret with water at the end of each lab. 2. To rinse the inside of the buret, pour a small amount of NaOH into it. Drain the buret through the stop cock. Rinse the buret more than once. (Remember to do this before you start th lab experiment to clean the buret.) 3. Fill the buret with the NaOH solution and to remove any air, allow a small quantity to pass through the stopcock. 4. Rinse a 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask and then make sure the bottom of the flask is dry. To get the mass of only the solute, rezero the flask on the scale. 5. Add about 0.20 to 0.30 grams of KHP (acid) to the flask. Measure precisely to the 100ths place and record the mass. Add approximately 60-70 mL of water to dissolve KHP and add 2-3 drops of phenolphthalein indicator. Shake or swirl the flask to speed up the dissolving of the KHP. 6. Record the level of NaOH in the buret (to the 100ths Place). All volumes should be to the 100ths place (0.00). Carefully add the NaOH to the flask containing the acid solution. Throughout the experiment, rinse the inside of the flask with water from a water bottle and stop adding NaOH and then swirl the flask to mix the solution. 7. Stop adding NaOH when a light pink color persists (when neutralization occurs). Record the final reading of NaOH that’s in the buret and find the final volume. 8. Calculate the molarity of the NaOH solution and then complete all 12 titrations before beginning to solve the calculations. Expand your calculations to 4 decimal places and accept only the values that are within 0.005 of each other. 9. Of the accepted molarity readings, take the average. This is known as the molarity of your standardized base solution, which will be used to calculate the molar masses of the unknown acids and molarity of a soft drink. C – Calculating the Molar Masses of Unknown Acids 1. Repeat the same steps 1-4 from Section B to prepare for the titration of the unknown acid solution. 2. Repeat the same steps 5-7 substituting the unknown acid for KHP. The unknown acids are in labeled jars A, B, and C. It will be indicated whether the acids are monoprotic, diprotic, or triprotic. 10 titrations should be completed for each unknown acid. 3. From the equation on the first page, calculate the molar mass of the acid using your average molarity. Find the molar mass based on the number of protons in each acid. 4. Accept the values that are within 1.0 of each other. Calculate the average of all the acceptable values and then repeat for the remaining acids. 5. When back in the classroom, you will receive the correct molar mass of the acids so you can calculate the percent error. D- Calculation of Molarity of a soft drink solution 1. Repeat steps 1-4 from Section B to prepare for the titration of the soft drink solution. 2. Take the soft drink solution from a buret on the back lab table recording the initial and final volume from the soft drink buret. Add approximately 40 mL of the soft drink to your flask. Make sure you record the exact volume to the 100ths place. Do not add water to your flask. 3. Each group should have 3 titrations completed. Accept the values that are within 0.01M of each other. Calculate the average of all the acceptable values. Conclusion: In this lab experiment, overall, I learned how to titrate. The concentration of one solution was determined by its reaction with a standard solution. The molar mass of unknown acids were also calculated. While learning to titrate, I learned several other skills in the process. I learned how to prepare a standard solution of sodium hydroxide, how to standardize a sodium hydroxide solution by using potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP), how to find the molar masses of unknown organic acids when given whether the acid is monoprotic, diprotic, or triprotic, and how to calculate the molarity of a soft drink. At the same time, other skills were practiced. Skills such as calculating molarity, molar mass and percent error were exercised. The molarity was calculated for part B, the standardization of sodium hydroxide. After all of the molarities were calculated, five of them were accepted and the average came out to be 0.0935, which was the number that would be used throughout the lab to help calculate the molar masses of the unknown acids and the molarity of a soft drink. The molar mass was calculated for the unknown acids A, B, and C. Molar mass is grams of solute divided by the average molarity multiplied by the total amount of liters. In acid A, five molar masses were accepted and the average came out to be 180.0440. In acid B, only three molar masses were accepted and the average came out to be 154.5841. In acid C, there were four of the the molar masses accepted and the average came out to be 180.6426. The percent errors of the unknown acids were relatively small with the exception of acid C. For acid A the percent error was 2.22%, for acid B it was 2.99%, and for acid C it was 13.54%. The percent error for acid A and B is small because of how much NaOH was used. The amount was always less than below 40.00 grams except for once, and most of the time the amount of NaOh was in the 20’s or below. During the trials for acid C, the amount of NaOH used was no less than 33.90 grams for each trial. In Part D of the experiment, the molarity of a soft drink solution was calculated. Ginger Ale was mixed with NaOH solutions. This titration resulted in a pink, dark peach and a dark, dark peach color. Of three molarities recorded, all three were accepted. The averages of the accepted molarities of Ginger Ale were 0.0311.

In this world, he and his sons are men of greatness that â€Å"have what it takes† to make it in the business environment. In reality, none of them can achieve this greatness until they confront and deal with this illusion. This behavior continues as Willy encourages Biff to cheat off the neighbor, Bernard, for his Regents exam, and again when he asks both Biff and Hap to steal lumber from the construction site for the front porch. Willy was so intent upon teaching his sons how to be successful, but his inability to deal with reality and his twisted sense of morals were actually responsible for their failure.
